Show plates are not road legal: for shows, garages and display only. Any text up to 10 characters, scaled to fit, no supplier marks and no documents needed.
The preview is a guide. Road-legal plates use the legal typeface, 79 mm characters and spacing; the maker sets the final layout to BS AU 145e and adds their name and postcode.
Your documents
The law says road-legal plates can only be made once the seller has checked your name and address, and that you're entitled to the registration.

What counts as proof (GOV.UK list)
Name and address, one of
- Driving licence
- Utility, Council Tax or rates bill from the last 6 months
- Bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
- National identity card
Name only (send a proof of address too)
- Passport (does not need to be a UK passport)
- Bank or building society debit or credit card
- Police warrant card
- Armed forces identity card
The registration, one of
- V5C or V5CNI logbook, or its green new keeper slip
- V750 or V750NI certificate of entitlement
- V778 retention document
- V11 or V11NI tax or SORN reminder
- V379 or V379NI temporary registration certificate
- V948 number plate authorisation certificate stamped by DVLA, or the electronic eV948 / eV948/2
- A fleet, lease or hire company letter quoting the V5C document reference
- A View Vehicle Record print-out (fleets in the V5C on-demand scheme)
- UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC)
