Document guide
Road-legal number plates can only be made by a supplier on the DVLA's Register of Number Plate Suppliers. That supplier has to see who you are and that you're entitled to the registration. This page explains what we'll ask for when orders open, and why.
Why we ask
- It's the law. Under the Vehicles (Crime) Act 2001, businesses that sell number plates must be registered with the DVLA. GOV.UK says you can only get plates made up by a registered number plate supplier.
- Registered suppliers must see proof of your name and address and proof that you're entitled to the registration. They keep a record of each sale for DVLA, police and Trading Standards checks.
- It protects you: it makes it much harder for someone to have plates made with your registration on them.
Proof of who you are (name and address)
- Driving licence
- Utility, Council Tax or rates bill from the last 6 months
- Bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
- National identity card
Proof of who you are (name only)
- Passport (does not have to be issued in the UK)
- Bank or building society debit or credit card
- Police warrant card
- Armed forces identity card
Proof you're entitled to the registration
- Vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI), or the green new keeper slip from it
- Certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI) or retention document (V778)
- Renewal reminder for vehicle tax or SORN (V11 or V11NI)
- Temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
- Number plate authorisation certificate (V948, eV948 or eV948/2)
- A letter of authorisation from a fleet operator, or a UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC)
- A PDF of the vehicle's details from the GOV.UK view vehicle record service
What happens when orders open
- You build your plates and place the order.
- We ask for your documents in a separate, secure step and check them before any plate is made. We'll confirm exactly which combination we need at that point.
- We keep the record the law requires, for as long as it requires, and nothing more.
- Today, this site collects no documents at all. The upload boxes on the product pages are a preview of the step.
